A stunning and incredibly rare Balenciaga metallic-gold brocaded pink silk evening dress from his 1965 Spring-Summer collection. Cristobal Balenciaga began his life's work in fashion at a very young age. It is fabled that the Marquesa de Casa Torres, who was so taken with his talent, sent him to Madrid for formal training in tailoring when he was just a teenager. Balenciaga's designs were more often than not, linear and streamlined. While Fath and Dior produced curvy confections know as "The New Look", Balenciaga created forms that hovered around the body in fluid lines. Balenciaga achieved what is considered to be his most important contribution to the world of fashion: a new silhouette for women.
This one-of-a-kind sculpted haute couture dress is a wonderful example of his genius. Fashioned from the highest quality pink floral patterned brocaded silk, it has a feminine appeal that doesn't age. The garment is tailored with an expert eye that understands how to use asymmetry to achieve a seductive yet ultra flattering silhouette. The bodice is an elegant fully-boned corset strapless with an hourglass nipped waist. The dramatic high-slit asymmetric pointed skirt is embellished with sparkling sequins and metallic embroidery. The dress is refined, graceful and has true couture workmanship. Though the result was seemingly simple, the construction is quite complicated. The pictures say it all.
