  • 1998 Dolce & Gabbana 'Stromboli Collection' Hand-Painted Butterflies Grey Sheer Silk Corset Gown

    ID: 0519263
    Size: small - medium
    Condition: excellent

An instantly recognizable and highly coveted Dolce & Gabbana hand-painted butterflies charcoal grey sheer silk corset gown dating back to their iconic 1998 spring/summer 'Stromboli' collection. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana built their house on a vision of unapologetic Italian sensuality, blending Sicilian romanticism with sharp tailoring and cinematic glamour. Throughout the 1990s, their work helped define an era of fashion that celebrated femininity in a bold and unmistakably seductive way.

Danielle Zinaich modeled this ultra rare, well-documented look on the runway. It was also a featured piece in the season's ad campaign, worn by British model Erin O’Connor for the March 1998 issue of Vogue Italia. Constructed from lightweight sheer silk chiffon in a smoky charcoal grey hue, the gown feels almost weightless against the body. The neckline is softly sculpted into a gentle scoop shape, suspended from delicate spaghetti straps that beautifully expose the shoulders. Beneath the sheer chiffon is an interior corset with vertical boning that subtly shapes the waist and creates the unmistakable Dolce & Gabbana silhouette. The draped chiffon wrapping across the torso has been individually hand-tacked into place, and the effect is incredibly flattering on the figure. The dress then releases into a fluid bias-cut skirt that glides over the hips and falls effortlessly to the floor. A slit at the back allows you to move with ease, while two elongated chiffon panels descend dramatically from the corset back into layered trains that create eye-catching drama. Hand-crafted butterfly appliqués scattered throughout the bodice and hips elevate this archival masterpiece into something a work of wearable art. Rendered in airy white silk with touches of pale pink and charcoal detailing, they appear to float across the surface of the gown. This archival dress instantly transforms how you carry yourself the moment you put it on. Whether worn to a major gala or an important red carpet this important piece delivers the kind of fashion moment people remember long after you leave the room.
