An absolutely breathtaking Bob Mackie couture beaded velvet hooded hourglass gown designed for the San Francisco Opera's 1989 production of 'Lulu'. Bob Mackie began his career as a Hollywood costuming sketch artist, working for both Edith Head and Jean Louis. While working with designer Ray Aghayan, Mackie soon began creating evening clothing for the divas who would make him a household name- most notably Carol Burnett, Raquel Welch, Diana Ross and Cher. Custom couture Bob Mackie pieces are rare, as they were not mass marketed and were incredibly expensive to make. This enchanting yet seductive gown is a perfect example of his genius. Of all Bob Mackie creations, theatrical gowns are the ones you want. So much drama and a true sense of how he brought theater to the fashion world! This showstopper is of the highest quality; sparkling crystals and eye-catching striped beadwork on luxurious black velvet. This embellishment must have taken weeks to complete. The bodice has a fantastic optional hood asymmetric bare shoulder design which I'm obsessed with. Talk about making a grand entrance. Both the gorgeous hood and hemline are trimmed in ultra-soft fox fur. I love the flattering bias-cut hourglass silhouette which has such fantastic movement. I totally see this look walking down the red carpet or at the most glamorous affair. An unforgettable Bob Mackie custom couture documented gown that will instantly become a favorite in your collection.
