  • 1960's Gene Shelly Seafoam Fully- Sequin Stretch Knit Beaded Collar Hourglass Gown

    ID: 0319261
    Size: small
    Condition: excellent

This captivating Gene Shelly seafoam blue-green, fully sequined, stretch knit gown with a beaded collar dates back to the mid-1960s. Gene Shelly was one of the most sought-after American stage and eveningwear designers of the 1960s, celebrated for his intricate hand-beading and impeccably fitted 'wiggle' silhouettes that accentuated the female form. This particular gown captures that aesthetic beautifully. The silhouette is cut close through the bodice and hips, hugging your curves before falling into a long, lean line that elongates the body. Fashioned from a mid-weight seafoam blue green stretch wool knit, the entire surface is densely covered in iridescent sequins that shimmer when they catch the light. The sleeveless cut keeps it clean and elegant, while a subtle side slit near the hem introduces just enough ease of movement with a peek of leg. The true focal point is the extraordinary collar. Formed in a rounded, bib-like shape that sits high along the neckline, it is lavishly hand-embellished with a rich mixture of  iridescent crystals, gold metallic beads, luminous faux pearls and prong-set rhinestones. The dense arrangement gives the effect of a jeweled collar necklace integrated directly into the gown, framing the shoulders and face with radiant texture. Shelly revisited this distinctive collar design for stage outfits he created for The Supremes, including their performance on the variety program The Hollywood Palace in 1967 and again at the Royal Variety Performance in London in 1968. The connection places this gown squarely within the glamorous visual language of 1960s performance fashion. Gene Shelly pieces, particularly examples with such elaborate hand-beading, unique color and preserved in such beautiful condition as this are increasingly difficult to find. Decades later this special dress still reads as effortlessly glamorous.
