  • 1930's Germaine Monteil Couture Polka Dot Silk Appliqué Bias-Cut Gown w/ Capelet

    ID: 0927252
    Size: small
    Condition: very good

An absolutely breathtaking and ultra rare Germaine Monteil couture polka dot bias-cut gown ensemble dating back to the mid 1930's. Germaine Monteil is remembered most for her cosmetics empire, but she was first a well-known fashion designer. Born in France, she moved to America in the early 1930's and opened her own house at 663 Fifth Avenue in New York. In recognition of her vast influence upon the fashion industry, Monteil received a Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1938. This incredible black and yellow polka-dot silk gown with matching capelet is a masterclass in craftsmanship. The chic thin-strap bodice has the most incredible floral appliqués along the bodice in the same hue. This detail adds such depth and texture to the delicate fabric. The matching romantic tiered capelet elevates the look with additional layers gracefully falling over the bust, lending an air of allure. The bias-cut design of this exquisite gown drapes the body in a flattering silhouette, emphasizing the curves while allowing for graceful movement. Definitely a type of garment that would have influenced John Galliano while he was working at Christian Dior. It is amazing that a gown with this amount of presence can literally feel almost weightless but it does. An iconic example of high-end 'Old Hollywood' glamour from this very special era.
    Measurements
    Bust: 31-34 inches
    Waist: 24-27 inches
    Hips: up to 36 inches
    Total Length: 60 inches
This 1930's Germaine Monteil designer gown is in very good wearable condition with no fade, alterations or missing appliqués. Slips over the head with no additional closures. Signs of wear include some over all faint surface spots and two tiny holes to the silk bodice which do not go through the lining. Please message for detailed pictures. A rare piece of wearable art that will only go up in value.
