1950’s Hattie Carnegie Couture Large-Scale Black Floral Chenille Lace Full Skirted High-Low Gown

There is something incredibly special about this early 1950's Hattie Carnegie couture large-scale floral lace full skirted gown. Hattie Carnegie was one of the most influential figures in American fashion, opening her first shop in 1909 at just 23 years old. Though she never learned to cut or sew herself, Carnegie had an extraordinary eye and built an empire around the idea of dressing a woman “from hat to hem.” She traveled regularly to Paris, translating the ideas of French haute couture for her American clientele, while her own fashion house became an important training ground for designers including Norman Norell, Pauline Trigère and James Galanos. Her importance to the development of American high fashion simply cannot be overstated, and this breathtaking example perfectly illustrates why her designs were so coveted.
The gown fits closely through the bodice and waist before opening into an incredibly full skirt, creating the hourglass shape that defined the beginning of the decade. Short sleeves lightly cover the shoulders, while a low cut V-neckline is edged in black lace with just a narrow peek of cream tulle beneath. An inner lining of soft taffeta provides coverage through the body, allowing the sheer outer layer to take center stage. The sweeping skirt is cut with a beautifully pronounced high-low hemline, and horsehair worked into the bottom edge helps the expansive hem hold its shape. Undoubtedly, the fabric is the showstopper here. Sheer black net lace is woven with an intricate pattern of ferns and foliage, then scattered with oversized floral chenille lace appliqués that create wonderful dimension. Two layers of tulle beneath the lace add volume over the taffeta lining. The back has a wide scooped neckline with a magnificent flower positioned prominently between your shoulder blades. The fitted waist then gives way to voluminous skirting that cascades gracefully to the floor.

This exceptional early 1950's Hattie Carnegie designer gown is in beautiful condition with original metal side zipper in place. Some minor signs of age include a small repair to the lace in back, faint underarm wear to the interior only and one faint spot to the lining on the left side of the skirt Please message for detailed pictures.
