  • 1950's Don Loper Couture Ivory Silk Satin Strapless Full-Skirted Dress w/ Detachable Cape

    D: 0719263
    Size: small
    Condition: excellent

This captivating and incredibly special 1950's candlelight ivory silk satin full skirted dress with detachable bow-trimmed cape was created by the iconic American couturier Don Loper. A true Hollywood renaissance man, Loper proudly described himself as a "quintuple threat" in show business—dancer, choreographer, actor, designer, and producer. In 1946, he opened his couture salon on Sunset Boulevard, attracting an elite clientele that included Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, and Ginger Rogers. His costume designs also appeared throughout Hollywood's Golden Age. Loper even became a household name beyond fashion when he portrayed himself in the beloved 1955 I Love Lucy episode, "The Fashion Show," cementing his place in Old Hollywood history.

The epitome of 1950's femininity, this dress showcases the figure-flattering 'New Look' silhouette that defined the era. The fully boned strapless bodice cinches the waist into a striking hourglass form before flowing into a graceful full skirt. The fabric is extraordinary. At first glance it appears to be a classic ivory silk satin, but a closer look reveals warm candlelight-tone woven highlights and an intricate dusting of tiny metallic flecks that animate the surface with subtle brilliance. What truly elevates this design is Loper's brilliant detachable cape! Secured by hidden buttons along the interior upper back of the dress, the cape rests effortlessly across the shoulders before attaching at the neckline with two hook-and-eyes covered by a charming bow. From the front, it frames the bodice with dramatic softness while never concealing the elegant strapless neckline beneath. From the back you see just how clever and thoughtful this design really is. The cape opens into a deep V at the back while cascading right to the hemline. Rather than feeling like an accessory, the cape becomes one with the silhouette. It really creates extraordinary movement with every step you take. This mid-century archival look feels just as relevant today as it did when it debuted. It would definitely serve as an unforgettable bridal moment, allowing you to make a breathtaking entrance with the cape and then remove it for the reception. The dress would also be epic for the red carpet, proving that Don Loper's Old Hollywood aesthetic remains just as compelling over 50 decades later.
