  • 1962 Mr. Blackwell Custom Couture Rhinestone Sequin Wings Nude-Illusion Gown

    ID: 0802253
    Size: medium
    Condition: very good

An ultra-rare, shockingly sexy Mr. Blackwell custom couture sparkling nude illusion hourglass gown dating back to his 1962 collection. Richard Blackwell launched his first collection in the late 1950's, where his designs were theatrical with over the top embellishments. The impressive, head-turning collections made were constantly recognized by his epic, ultra flattering silhouettes and intricate feminine details. Notably, Mr. Blackwell was also known as an important fashion critic and was one of the first to create a "worst dressed" list after award shows.
This incredible showstopper, fashioned from a luxurious soft double-layered nude mesh, is definitely an eye-catching look so iconic to the era. The same year Marilyn Monroe wore the controversial “Happy Birthday Mr. President” gown and you can't ignore the similar vibe of both looks. The dresses are meant to give the impression that you are only covered in sparkling embellishments in such an elegant way. Glistening glass beads, iridescent sequins, and sparkling prong-set rhinestones are used to create grand wings across the bust. The largest winged pattern flows down the legs, hiding the private parts just enough to keep the mind curious. Along with the back vent extension for easier movement, there are also small weights sewn into the bottom layers to keep the hourglass silhouette perfectly in place. We were also thrilled to find a picture of Mr. Blackwell himself posing next to the same dress back in 1962! It's truly a wearable work of art yet this unique gown reads so incredibly modern. These archival Mr. Blackwell 'custom' labeled glamour gowns are rare, as they were not mass produced and were incredibly expensive to make. This is such a museum worthy extraordinary example of Old Hollywood fashion history that will instantly make you the center of attention.

Only signs of age are a few faint surface stains, the largest by the right hip. There is also some minor missing beadwork. Please message for detailed pictures.
