We're thrilled to offer this extremely rare, museum quality 1972 spring-summer Hanae Mori couture sunset ombré floral silk slip gown with matching overlay jacket. Revered as one of Japan's greatest fashion pioneers, Hanae Mori introduced Japanese couture to an international audience through an unmistakable blend of Eastern artistry and Western elegance. In 1965, she became the first Japanese designer to present a collection in New York, and in 1977 she made history once again as the first Japanese member of the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Her creations became celebrated for their poetic prints, luxurious silks, graceful movement, and meticulous craftsmanship, attracting an extraordinary clientele that included Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, Nancy Reagan, Princess Masako of Japan, and the international cultural elite.

This remarkable ensemble is documented in the June 1972 issue of Vogue, worn by Hiroko Matsumoto, widely regarded as the world's first Japanese supermodel. The slip dress underlay is a screenprinted silk that skims the figure before falling into a full length column. Slender shoulder straps frame a softly sculpted sweetheart neckline, while a center-front slit provides ease of movement and a subtle flash of leg. This iconic, documented Hanae Mori ensemble is in beautiful condition with no noticeable stains, rips or alterations. Only signs of wear are one very faint watermark to the underlay slip dress and two tiny pin holes which is not noticeable at all when worn.
