  • 1978 Loris Azzaro Couture Black Sequin Strapless Tiered-Ruffle Gown & Sheer Capelet

    ID: 1017262
    Size: small
    Condition: excellent

We can't get over this captivating circa 1978 Loris Azzaro black sequin strapless tiered-tulle gown with matching sheer capelet. Azzaro founded his Parisian fashion house in the late 1960s, becoming renowned for his sensual, body-conscious eveningwear, daring cut-outs, and shimmering embellishments. His creations helped define the extravagant style of the 1970s, dressing icons such as Tina Turner, Sophia Loren, and Raquel Welch.

Archival Azzaro designs are incredibly difficult to document, so we were thrilled to discover a 1978 photograph of Raquel Welch with the designer himself, trying on a sequin piece with the same distinctive low-cut strapless bustier style bodice! Our strapless gown has a seductive sweetheart plunge with an interior built-in bra. Fashioned from stretch nylon completely covered in glossy black sequins, the dress molds to your figure. Just below the hips, the fitted portion gives way to a spectacular skirt of soft black net tulle in cascading tiers that extend to the floor. A large bow is positioned at the front, adding a playful finishing touch. What makes our gown even more special is that it retains its original matching capelet! Fashioned from the same sheer black tulle, the capelet ties at the neck and features layers of flounced ruffles that fall over the shoulders and arms. The overall 1930's vibe is especially thoughtful; the ensemble reminds us of a modern Ginger Rogers look! It's incredibly photogenic, and we love that you can wear the set together for maximum drama and then remove the capelet to reveal the striking silhouette underneath.

    Measurements
    Bust: 32-33 inches
    Waist: 26-27 inches
    Hips: 36-37 inches
Length top to waist: 10 inches
Length waist to hem: 40 inches

This special Loris Azzaro designer gown with matching cape is in beautiful condition with no rips, holes or alterations. The shimmering black sequins is still glossy and rich. Gown closes with a hand-set back zipper.  This archival ensemble is an investment piece that will continue to increase in value.
