  • 1983 Mary McFadden Ivory Heavily Pleated Asymmetric One-Shoulder Draped Goddess Gown

    ID: 0809262
    Size: extra small
    Condition: excellent

If you're searching for an ethereal bridal look, this 1983 spring/summer Mary McFadden couture asymmetric one-shoulder draped Marii goddess gown is such an epic choice. Mary McFadden built an unmistakable design legacy by drawing inspiration from art, historic textiles, and cultures from around the world, translating those influences into sophisticated eveningwear unlike anything else of the era. In 1975, she introduced her patented synthetic Marii textile—named after a Japanese variation of her own name—a permanently pleated fabric engineered to evoke the flowing beauty of ancient Chinese silk, or "liquid gold," while remaining remarkably resilient and travel friendly.

This special find is a perfect example of McFadden's signature Marii designs. Rendered in a soft ivory hue, the fabric transforms a simple column into a study of movement and light, skimming the figure before falling to a graceful floor length with unbelievable movement. A one-shoulder strap balances a gently squared neckline, while angled pleating sweeps diagonally across the bodice, creating a vibe that is both sculptural and effortless. One of the gown's most captivating elements is its layered construction. Two separate panels attach discreetly at the bodice before falling freely, allowing them to sway as you walk. A narrow panel falls along the side, while an overlay drapes diagonally across the front, creating a chic asymmetric hem that reveals the full-length skirt beneath. A concealed side zipper preserves the gown's uninterrupted lines. The back continues the horizontally pleated bodice before transitioning into the vertically pleated skirt. Every seam has been carefully considered so your eye remains focused on the rhythmic beauty that makes the Marii fabric instantly recognizable. We were especially thrilled to discover Mary McFadden wearing one of her own creations remarkably similar to this dress at the 1983 CFDA Awards.

For our petite vixens preparing for their special day, few archival gowns offer this combination of timeless allure and effortless wearability. Yet its versatility extends far beyond the aisle. Whether you're exchanging vows, attending a summer soirée in the Hamptons, or making an unforgettable 'white party' appearance, this exceptional Mary McFadden is destined to be cherished for years to come.
