  • 1984 Thierry Mugler 'Winter of the Angels' Metallic Gold Lamè & Stretch Velvet Gown

    ID: 0416252
    Size: extra small
    Condition: very good

A totally iconic and incredibly rare Thierry Mugler metallic gold lamé and stretch velvet jersey goddess gown dating back to his epic 1984-1985 fall/winter 10th anniversary collection. The 'Winter of the Angels' show was a spectacle with over 6,000 public viewers. This historical performance combined fashion with theatre and music as never before. "The Angels", as Thierry referred to his models, with their halos and gold wings floated down the runway in 350 pieces from the collection. This show was considered a commercial runway debut for the brand and cemented Mugler's genius. Known for bold fashion and edgy, sometimes even campy theatricality, the legendary French fashion designer's work has a lasting legacy.
This highly coveted gold lamé and stretch velvet gown is a perfect example of his unforgettable artistry. We were also thrilled to see that the Metropolitan Museum of Art has a version of this gown in their collection as well. Crafted in two striking materials the fabric choices speak volumes. The metallic gold lamé is pleated like shells on the bodice and drapes down the silhouette over the velvet jersey in a fashion that hints at the notion of bare flesh while keeping the body concealed. We adore the soft crackled texture of the beige velvet jersey; it is skin-like and creates a harmonious fusion of structure and fluidity. The full length slightly-trained long silhouette is designed to hug and flatter the natural curves of the body. From top to bottom, this dress serves a total celestial mermaid moment! Garments from this show are next to impossible to find. If you’re looking for something truly unforgettable and historically significant to add to your archive, this is a piece that not only elevates your wardrobe but also connects you to a pivotal moment in fashion history.

Only signs of age are one faint surface spot on the high neck and missing shoulder pads, which can easily be added if desired. Label possible added at a later date. The epic level of work to create this gown would only be found in the highest haute couture of today. Highly wearable and an investment piece that will continue to increase in value.
