  • 1991 Azzedine Alaïa Iconic Runway Butterfly Print Ivory Stretch Knit Bodycon Catsuit

    ID: 0717253
    Size: small
    Condition: excellent

An incredibly rare and super seductive Azzedine Alaïa iconic butterfly print ivory catsuit dating back to his beloved 1991 fall-winter collection. This well documented piece was runway look 83 modeled by the beautiful Elle Macpherson. We were thrilled to also find that the piece resurfaced in 2002 on Omahyra Mota for a Vogue Germany campaign shot by Ellen von Unwerth. Alaïa introduced the world to the 'body' and to his own skin tight dresses. Truly a showcase for the perfect human form, his bodycon look sat alongside the more masculine power suits of the decade. As Suzy Menkes said, "If there were any justice in this fashion world, Azzedine Alaïa would be a worldwide household name, instead of a cult hero. He defined the way an entire generation dresses and became the fashion revolution of the last decade." His trademark second skin dressing earned him the nickname of 'The King of Cling', thanks to his love and experimentation of uncompromising stretch fabrics. These were materials which he would fashion into almost perfect body stockings from a trade he learned years back during his time spent with an array of great couturiers that he not only studied under, but greatly admired; namely Charles James, Madeleine Vionnet and Cristobal Balenciaga.

This epic, colorful catsuit is a perfect example of his genius. The fabric is ultra cozy; a thick cotton knit spandex blend that hugs every curve. The slight v-neckline extends the neck while the long sleeve and footless leggings design create a super lean silhouette. The vibrant large-scale butterfly pattern makes this look totally noteworthy. Designed by famous fashion illustrator Thierry Perez, the large multicolor intarsia knit butterflies dance across the entire form in orange, yellow, purple and maroon hues. For every woman, novelty prints are a fashion must-have. It's a style for all ages, simply because it exudes an undeniably youthful flair, and yet remains incredibly timeless. An important, archival Alaïa that will instantly become a forever favorite.
