  • 1999 John Galliano Maori Collection Wine Red Asymmetric High Slit Bias-Cut Gown

    ID: 104262
    Size: small / medium
    Condition: excellent

This highly coveted and absolutely breathtaking John Galliano wine-red silky asymmetric bias-cut full length gown perfectly captures the intoxicating drama from his 1999 fall/winter Maori collection. At this moment in his career, Galliano’s own label mirrored the theatricality and razor-sharp techniques he simultaneously brought to Dior; two parallel worlds feeding a singular vision. His work continues to be influential today, leaving an unmistakable imprint on the evolution of modern high fashion. This epic gown appeared as runway look 51, modeled by Inez Ribeiro, and embodies the collection’s tension between seduction and strength.

Designed to skim the body in a figure flattering bias-cut, the rich red color deepens in tone with movement and light as it pools into a floor-length sweep. The bodice is shaped through controlled draping, with the fabric drawn and folded to form a neckline that is fluid in design. Two contrasting shoulder treatments give the dress its quiet complexity: one side formed by a whisper-thin strap with two delicate swathes of silk on either side of the shoulder, the other finished with a draped sleeve that frames the upper body. Clever construction keeps everything perfectly in place—the shoulder straps are discreetly joined by a hidden slim band across the upper back. A seductive front slit introduces the right amount of allure, revealing just enough leg as you walk. The drama continues as you turn around with an asymmetrically cut open back, ensuring the gown is compelling from every angle. Galliano dresses from this era have become increasingly difficult to find. This is the kind of gown you choose when the moment matters—perfect for a red-carpet appearance or formal evening where presence is everything. When you wear it, you’re not simply wearing a beautiful dress; you’re stepping into one of Galliano’s most celebrated creative chapters.
