  • 2003 Christian Dior by John Galliano Metallic Powder Blue Floral Silk Brocade Lace Up Bias-Cut Gown

    ID: 0707262
    Size: extra small - small
    Condition: very good

This iconic and truly breathtaking 2003 spring-summer Christian Dior metallic powder-blue silk brocade lace up bias-cut gown can only be described in Galliano's own words: "hardcore romance." When John Galliano joined the House of Dior in 1996, he ushered in a new era of fantasy, reviving the legendary couture house with cinematic collections rooted in historical references and impeccable techniques. His work transformed the runway into spectacle, leaving an enduring mark on fashion and establishing many of the maison's most sought-after designs.

The fabric used for this dress is exceptional: a luxurious powder-blue woven silk brocade featuring large-scale sparkling gold lamé stylized iris blooms inspired by the sinuous lines of the Art Nouveau movement. As the light catches the metallic threads, the floral motif really comes alive across the surface. The silhouette draws inspiration from chic 1930s bias-cut evening gowns, yet Galliano infuses the nostalgia with his unmistakable rebellious edge. Airy semi-sheer silk chiffon ruffles frame the plunging neckline before cascading over the shoulders. The same chiffon continues in sculptural flounces that sweep diagonally across the skirt, accentuating the figure while adding beautiful movement. Adjustable lace-up detailing extends from the neckline to the waist at both the front and back, creating a corseted effect while allowing you to customize the fit. Gold-tone grommets punctuate each seam, introducing an unexpected 'punk rock' attitude that perfectly balances the gown's romantic softness. A row of Galliano's signature covered buttons runs along one side. Inspired by the ritual of dressing, he often spoke of his fascination with garments fastening slowly around the body. The skirt is finished with semi-sheer silk godet inserts that release below the knee into a graceful flare. Left to move freely, the godets create remarkable fluidity with every step, allowing the gown to glide effortlessly behind you. As shown, actress Goldie Hawn wore the ivory version of this design to the 2003 Golden Globe Awards, cementing its place in celebrity culture.

A rare documented example from Galliano's celebrated Dior years, this remarkable dress deserves an occasion as extraordinary as the gown itself. Whether worn to a gala, wedding, or red carpet affair, this archival beauty promises the kind of unforgettable look that only John Galliano could imagine.
