  • 2004 Versace Runway Black Silk & Velvet Sheer-Illusion Buckle Trimmed High Slit Gown

    ID: 0913263
    Size: small
    Condition: excellent

This provocative, well-documented Versace black silk and velvet sheer-illusion bias cut gown dates back to their epic fall/winter 2004 collection. After Gianni Versace’s death in 1997 his sister Donatella assumed creative direction, continuing the house's distinct aesthetic while making it unmistakably her own. This particular dress also feels like a clever nod to Gianni’s legendary spring/summer 1994 safety-pin collection. Vogue even noted the connection, pointing to Donatella’s return to the punk references her brother had so famously embraced.

The captivating runway gown appeared as Look 53 on Brazilian supermodel Fernanda Tavares, who also wore it for Versace’s worldwide advertising campaign featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, W and more. The seductive dress follows the body closely through the bust, waist and hips before falling into a floor-length skirt. A low scooped neckline leaves plenty of skin exposed, while the brilliant use of contrasting fabrics gives the garment wonderful dimension. Panels of plush black velvet and lustrous silk satin are cut into sweeping curves that follow the figure, with sheer silk-chiffon inserts throughout the skirt that float and separate as you walk. At the shoulders, one strap is fashioned from velvet, while the other is silk and connects to an adjustable patent-leather strap that continues across the back. The best detail is undoubtedly the dramatic use of sheer-illusion mesh and patent-leather buckles. One curved cut-out sweeps beneath the bust toward the waist, with illusion mesh creating the appearance of bare skin beneath. The main panel gives the impression that the gown has been split all the way down the front. Sheer mesh fills the opening, while narrow patent-leather straps appear to hold the two sides together, each buckle stamped with the Versace logo. The illusion ends at the thigh, where the dress opens into a dramatic high slit that reveals your leg with every step. The back is just as fabulous, with velvet crossing diagonally over a large illusion panel that leaves much of your back seemingly exposed. More straps curve around your side, eventually meeting a sheer chiffon godet that brings movement to the skirt. Everything works together to ensure you look incredible from every angle. Vampy, edgy, and unmistakably Versace, this archival look feels every bit as exciting today as when it debuted on the runway.
