  • 2010 Alexander McQueen 'Plato's Atlantis' Collection Colorful Print Silk Sculpted Mini Dress

    ID: 0717252
    Size: small
    Condition: excellent

A breathtakingly rare and extremely well documented Alexander McQueen colorful reptile print silk sculpted mini dress from one of his last runway collections. The highly coveted 2010 'Plato’s Atlantis' body of work was far ahead of its time. A similar version of this wearable art piece was runway look three modeled by Karmen Pedaru. We were thrilled to discover this special dress was chosen to be on the cover of Taschen's 2020 edition of the 'A-Z Fashion Designers book' by Valerie Steele. Additionally, it is part of the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This epic dress even walked the runway of the 2010 Fashion For Relief show which honoured the late Alexander McQueen with a special tribute led by Naomi Campbell. Additionally, Selma Hayek wore a similar version with the same print for the cover of In Style Magazine's June 2010 Issue. It's clear to see this garment has timeless importance!
McQueen was one of the first to use 3D-printing as a part of his show. This show was also one of the first to live-stream the collection, allowing people not present to watch. McQueen was casting an apocalyptic forecast of the future ecological meltdown of the world: Humankind is made up of creatures that evolved from the sea, and we may be heading back to an underwater future as the ice cap dissolves. The message throughout was essentially sunk into the short dress—a steady development of his engineered sea-reptile prints. Vogue runways notes it was “exceptionally executed and swagged, and molded across panniered structures. Each dress was a work of computer-generated art crossbred with McQueen's couture-based signature cut”. This sensational multi-color printed silk satin and chiffon fabric has a fusion of different printed reconstructed reptile skins. The figure flattering silhouette has a deep v neckline with lightly padded structured shoulders. I love the unique pleating around the bustline. Intricate sculpted pleating also extends from the front and back of the nipped waist and is draped around the hips, creating an organic shape that enhances the body. An unforgettable archival lifetime McQueen that will become a forever favorite.
