An ethereal and truly iconic Zandra Rhodes hand-painted sheer silk chiffon & tiered tulle ivory bridal gown dating back to her 1972-73 'Shells' couture collection. As shown, a similar version was Princess Anne's choice look for her official 1973 engagement photos. Twiggy was even featured on the cover of Vogue in 1973 wearing a dreamy Zandra hand painted ivory gown! Zandra Rhodes was one of the British designers who put London at the forefront of the international fashion scene in the 1970's. Her designs are considered creative statements, dramatic but graceful, bold but feminine. Zandra is renowned for her use of prints, and this gown really lets her brilliance shine through. This exemplar of Rhodes' early work is an important find for the serious collector. This magical creation floats over the body like a delicate butterfly. The fabric itself is a masterpiece; semi-sheer ivory silk chiffon which is entirely hand painted in one of her famous wave squiggle motifs. The tiered tulle inlays act like waves with movement. I love how the hand embellishments of pearls and iridescent beads throughout the whole garment catch the light and add such beautiful texture. The neckline dips low with a beautiful rope style cord. The winged sleeves flow into a figure flattering elasticized waistline. A gorgeous silk satin waist sash creates the perfect silhouette. The full skirt cascades down with so much detail; the semi-sheer nature works so well with this design. Rhodes' exotic originality makes her work among the most copied in the fashion world today. Would make an epic bridal moment. The pictures say it all!
