1920's Sheer Ivory Embroidered Floral Motif Net-Tulle Tiered Ruffle 'Robe de Style' Dress

There is something extremely romantic about a 1920's dress that has already lived an entire century—and this heavily embroidered ivory net-tulle tiered ruffle dress feels like a particularly special survivor. This decade transformed women’s fashion, loosening the rigid conventions of earlier eras as hemlines rose and clothing became increasingly free in both construction and spirit. While the straight, dropped-waist flapper shape may be its most familiar legacy, the period also embraced the feminine 'robe de style', popularized by Jeanne Lanvin, and this dress aligns closely with that look.

The bodice follows a long line before the skirt flares outward from the hips. Given its shape, the dress may have originally been worn with small panniers beneath the skirt to enhance its volume at either side, most likely with an under-slip for coverage. The workmanship is extraordinary; a wide panel runs vertically from the squared neckline to the hem, covered in scrolling floral embroidery with stylized blossoms, curling stems, and leaves. Narrow bands of openwork net-lace border either side, drawing the eye down the entire length of the dress. The bodice is fashioned from two layers of sheer net tulle, with petite flutter sleeves softening the shoulders. Below the hips, the skirt transitions to a single layer of transparent tulle covered in horizontal rows of gathered ruffles that wrap all the way around. The result is wonderfully light, allowing the tiers to float as you move while revealing glimpses of the leg beneath. Silk-satin bows attach at each hip, their warm champagne tone standing out against the ivory foundation, while the coordinating sash falls loosely around the waist rather than cinching the figure. The back is equally beautiful, with tulle framed by vertical embroidered lace bands that echo the front. Additional floral needlework traces the outer edges, while the sheer center panel offers an alluring glimpse of the skin beneath.
