An absolutely breathtaking and super rare Lettie Lee couture floral silk appliquéd billow sleeve dress dating back to her 1936 collection. We were thrilled to find the original editorial for the dress where Ginger Rodgers herself modeled the design! Lettie Lee, born Flora Bell Fain, was a talented Hollywood costume designer. She designed the costumes for several 1930's 'Film Noir' and early 'Talkies'. She most notably dressed Fay Wray in 'Ann Carver’s Profession', a film that directly followed her star turn in 'King Kong'. Hollywood certainly didn’t destroy Paris as the fashion capital of the world, but it became a center of fashion for women who looked to famous celebrities for style inspiration. This special, well-documented dress is fashioned in a stunning red and pink tulip floral print silk with an ethereal black sheer silk-net overlay. The bodice features an alluring ruffle trimmed wide necklace which showcases the décolletage beautifully. I love the voluminous billow sleeves which have intricate large floral appliqués. This figure flattering garment nips in at the waist with a built-in sash bow. It is impeccably seamed and on the level of modern day couture. This museum worthy dress embodies the perfect balance of elegance and whimsy that makes 1930's fashion so desirable. A true piece of Old Hollywood fashion history.
