An absolutely breathtaking and ultra rare French custom couture ivory silk satin strapless hourglass skirted dating back to the mid 1950’s. I was not surprised to learn this showstopper was made by one of Norman Hartnell’s seamstresses. Hartnell was dressmaker to Queen Elizabeth II. Due to the similar fabric choice and intricate embellishment work, this dress could only have been done by experienced couturier hands. The fabric is a luxurious midweight glossy duchesse silk satin in a stunning creamy ivory color. The fully detachable skirting is made of the highest quality silk net-tulle, and is double lined in two different shades of pale yellow to create a soft burst of color against the satin. The beadwork is truly next level. Fully embroidered metallic gold and silver stylized star designs with pearls and rhinestones throughout dance across the entire bodice. This type of work takes weeks to complete. A sure tell sign that this was done by one of Hartnell’s seamstresses is the way some of the pearls stick out up to an inch from the gown. As seen in the reference photos, this was a notable trait of Hartnell’s designs and he would have different “hands” embroider each section of a gown. It is no coincidence that when one of his seamstresses did her own designs she took some of those traits with her; as seen on our gorgeous gown! Intricate interior corset boning ensures a tailored fit, and the sparkling strapless neckline showcases a woman's captivating bustline. The fitted nipped-waist gives the garment the most flattering hourglass silhouette. The skirted overlay really looks sensational with movement. A gorgeous one-of-a-kind custom French haute couture gown that would definitely make an unforgettable bridal or red carpet look.
