  • 1964 Yma Sumac Documented Custom Couture Ruched Black Silk Hourglass Gown w/ Cape

    ID: 0802252
    Size: small
    Condition: excellent

A truly breathtaking, one-of-a-kind museum worthy Yma Sumac custom couture black ruched silk hourglass gown with detachable cape dating back to 1964. Yma Sumac (1922–2008) was a noted Peruvian soprano and the original Queen of Exotica. Her international fame began in the early 1950's, and she became the most famous proponent of exotica music. She is remembered best for her extraordinary vocal range, which was well over four and a half octaves. She was also quite the fashionista, and in 2010 'V' fashion magazine voted her one of the top 5 World Muses! This absolutely stunning black silk hourglass stage gown ensemble comes straight from her personal wardrobe which Yma Sumac kept safe for decades. As shown, we are also pleased to have found more than one image of the queen wearing this glamorous look! This showstopper was Yma's choice for her epic performance on episode six of 'The Hollywood Palace Show' which aired February 8th, 1964. The luxurious, soft black silk-jersey has a slight stretch to it so it molds to the body effortlessly. There is an intricate, interior fully-boned corset and a seductive sweetheart plunge bodice that flows into a complex nipped-waist hourglass pleated construction. The nude illusion peekaboo bustier is adorned in delicate white lace netting and iridescent sequins; a sparkling touch that compliments very well against black. The detailed hand pleating throughout is just magnificent, and I would not be surprised to learn that this custom ensemble was modeled after Charles James’ designs. He often employed ruching techniques like this to create sculptural effects in ways that made the body look like an elaborate work of art. The matching full-length lightweight sheer cape is detachable, so the wearer can choose when the drama should be turned up. As Damon, Yma Sumac's personal assistant, told me, "Yma loved elegance mixed with a touch of exotic. I was fascinated to see how much effort was put into each piece and what was added inside for the perfect physique no matter what her age or weight at the time." A gown like this is a one-of-a-kind custom couture treasure and a true piece of celebrity fashion history. A once in a lifetime opportunity, and the pictures say it all.
