  • 1974 Biba by Barbara Hulanicki Metallic Orange Lurex Angel-Sleeve High Slit Maxi Dress

    ID: 0809261
    Size: small
    Condition: very good

This unforgettable and highly coveted 1974 fall-winter Biba metallic orange lurex angel-sleeve maxi dress captures the fearless glamour that made the London label one of the decade's defining fashion houses. Founded by the visionary Barbara Hulanicki, Biba transformed from a small mail-order business into an international style phenomenon by offering theatrical fashion inspired by the elegance of Art Deco, the flowing lines of Art Nouveau, and the romance of vintage Hollywood. The opening of the brand's sprawling Kensington department store in 1973 elevated Biba into far more than a boutique—it became a complete lifestyle destination where fashion, interiors, music, and nightlife blended into one immersive experience. Frequented by cultural icons including Twiggy, Mick Jagger, Brigitte Bardot, and Cher, the legendary store achieved true cult status and remains one of the most celebrated retail concepts in fashion history.

Executed in shimmering metallic orange lurex knit, the fabric catches the light from every angle as fine metallic threads bring the vibrant citrus hue to life. The fitted bodice softly defines the figure before flowing into a sweeping front high-slit skirt that skims the body without feeling restrictive. A low scooped neckline flatters the collarbone, while a row of fabric-covered buttons extends down the center. Two concealed snap closures are hidden beneath the lower portion at the thigh, ensuring everything remains securely in place while you walk. Turn around and you'll discover an attached belt that ties at the back, allowing you to adjust the waist for the most flattering fit. The angel-sleeves are what make this a true showstopper. They dramatically taper outward into breathtaking proportions, creating an unforgettable silhouette every time you lift your arms. Each sleeve is softly gathered at the wrist, forming elegant cascades of fabric and freeing your hands. This theatrical design is a perfect example of what made Biba unlike any other fashion house of the era. We even discovered an almost identical dress in the same cut and metallic lurex knit preserved in the permanent collection of London's V&A Museum. Additionally, a remarkably similar version purchased from the Biba store in 1974 was displayed in the Fashion and Textile Museum's celebrated 2024 Biba exhibition.

Original Biba garments have become increasingly difficult to acquire, and today the label ranks among the most collectible names in British vintage fashion. This piece promises an epic presence, the dramatic angel sleeves spring to life as you walk across the room or simply reach for a champagne glass, ensuring every movement is nothing short of spectacular.
