Leave it to Karl Lagerfeld to elevate a classic, as he did with this fabulous Spring/Summer 1999 Chanel black silk crepe jumpsuit. One fashion review of the collection, aptly titled “Chanel offers a look to endure,” described Lagerfeld as introducing clothes for a 'new' Chanel woman, turning traditional house motifs out “with tomorrow’s world in mind.” This inventive take on the black jumpsuit perfectly combines an effortless 1930s-inspired attitude with the precise construction and chic details that define Chanel.
The jumpsuit appeared on the runway as Look 54, modeled by Kim Iglinsky. Cut entirely from semi-sheer black silk crepe, the design fits closely through the bodice and waist before releasing into beautifully wide trouser legs. Broad shoulder straps frame a plunging V-neckline, while carefully pieced diagonal seams shape the bust. The pants skim over the hips before falling all the way to the floor, with an extra-long length that gives you the option to hem them precisely where desired. The construction around the waist, however, really sets this piece apart. Three angled panels travel diagonally across the torso and hips, their zig-zagged upper edges create an Art Deco effect as they wrap around the body. On one side, a separate band continues around the waist and fastens at the opposite back hip with a silver button bearing the interlocking CC logo. From the other hip, the seaming opens into three floor length sash panels that hang freely alongside the trouser leg. As you move, they trail and flutter by your side, adding an unexpected sense of drama. Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel pieces have become increasingly collectible, especially those from such an iconic era. Nearly three decades later, this jumpsuit still feels incredibly current. Wear it with pearls and heels for full Chanel glamour, or pair it with with a classic flat and let the cut do all the talking.
