  • 2004 John Galliano 'Cherubs & Flappers' Whimsical Print Silk Camisole & Cashmere Knit Bias-Cut Skirt Set

    ID: 0817263
    Size: small - medium
    Condition: excellent

We adore a whimsical novelty print, and this ultra rare John Galliano spring-summer 2004  'cherubs & flappers' silk slip top with matching bias-cut skirt set has to be one of our favorites ever. One of fashion’s most influential designers, Galliano became celebrated for transforming historical references into daring, highly original clothes through exceptional cut and a flair for storytelling. His simultaneous work at both his own label and Christian Dior helped redefine style throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, leaving an unmistakable mark on the industry.

The semi-sheer camisole slip blouse immediately draws you in with its vibrant playful print. The ivory silk chiffon with scattered blue leaves starts to read like illustrations from a 1920s storybook: Bundled-up flapper girls in red cloche hats, fur-trimmed coats, patterned skirts, and stockings mingle with mischievous winged cherubs. On the back, one woman bends over to adjust her stocking while a cherub hiding behind a striped hatbox draws back his bow and arrow. The top itself has an easy-to-wear, blousy shape that gently follows the figure before flaring slightly at the waist. Slender spaghetti straps complement the softly dipped front trimmed with lace, giving it a lingerie-inspired finish. The reverse falls into a low scoop, leaving much of the back exposed. The coordinating bias-cut skirt provides a beautiful textural contrast. Fashioned primarily from a fully lined cream silk-cashmere blend knit, it hugs the hips before narrowing toward the lower leg. A series of zigzag panels gives way to two tiers of fluttering silk chiffon: the upper features the same cheeky motif as the top, while the layer beneath introduces a sunny yellow floral-and-polka-dot pattern. Cut into irregular handkerchief points, the cascading tiers sway independently as you walk, bringing a lively burst of color and movement below the close-fitting knit. Part of the appeal of this ensemble is just how many ways you can style it. Wear both pieces together for the full Galliano fantasy. On more relaxed days, you could style the camisole with denim, while the skirt would be fabulous with a tailored jacket. This archival set is highly collectible, playful, and unmistakably Galliano.
