This sensational Ralph & Russo aqua blue silk draped high-slit gown dates back to their epic fall/winter 2017 haute couture collection. Founded by Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, the London-based house made fashion history in 2014 when it became the first British house in a century invited by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture to show on the official Paris couture schedule. In a relatively short time, they certainly made their mark, building an international clientele and an atelier devoted to the extraordinary craftsmanship.
Presented as look 47 and modeled by Zhenya Katava, this special gown originally retailed for a touch over $45,000. This look in particular was a standout within what Vogue described as "...an exceptionally lavish collection". Fashioned from luminous aqua blue silk satin with an additional silk lining, the dress follows the body through the waist and hips before falling to the floor in long, fluid folds. The construction is truly what makes this gown sensational. Angled panels overlap along the bodice, creating an unexpected triangular cut-out backed with nude mesh at the center. The one-shoulder layered band wraps over the shoulder, while another draped strap falls loosely over the arm. Carefully placed tacks at the ipped waist control the draping, sweeping the fabric toward one hip before opening into a dramatic thigh-high slit that reveals the leg as you walk. The reverse plunges into a deep angled V exposing your back, with the shoulder band continuing diagonally toward the opposite side of the waist. The fabric gathered at the hip then cascades down into a graceful asymmetric train. All of these carefully engineered lines seem to wrap around you, working in harmony especially as the gown moves. If the exterior construction wasn’t impressive enough, all the hand-stitched finishes on the inside will truly make you appreciate the artistry that went into creating this gown. With its documented catwalk provenance, unforgettable color, and exceptional workmanship, it represents exactly what Ralph & Russo did so well—create next-level glamour.
